The New Millennium Research Council (NMRC) will host a roundtable panel discussion at the National Press Club Wednesday October 27, 2004. The topic of discussion will be:
The End of Regulation? Reforming Telecom Policy and Regulators' Roles to Meet New Market Realities
Can Washington, D.C. and the States Keep Pace With Tomorrow's Technologies?
The breakfast event is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. (registration and breakfast begin at 8:00 a.m.).
This NMRC event is designed to spur NEW thinking! Leading telecom scholars and experts will present their unique perspectives on how federal and state regulators can better manage the sweeping changes occurring in communications technologies.
Panelists will present their vision(s) of an ideal 'regulatory future', one that encourages the expansion of an Internet Protocol (IP) enabled services and networks, reigns in 'bad' industry players, and protects consumers.
- The first panel, "A Fresh Look at Regulatory Models for the IP-Enabled Future " will feature a discussion of governing principles that could be applied to manage new Internet Protocol networks and services (e.g., High Tech Broadband Coalition principles, 'Layers' Models, FTC enforcement models, etc.).
- The second panel, "New Roles for Agencies and Regulators in Changing Times," will focus on revising roles for federal and state regulators to keep pace with the changing telecommunications landscape (e.g., What are the optimal roles for state and federal regulators? What new skill sets will be necessary for regulators to keep up with changes in the market?).
